Artist Spotlight: Xiaoyong Liu

Xiaoyong Liu started studying Chinese brush painting during China’s Cultural Revolution that began in the late 1960s and spanned into the mid-1970s. Afterwards, he was hired to create antique Chinese painting and designs at an arts, crafts, and antiques factory.

He emigrated to the United States in 2008, where he soon started teaching Chinese brush painting techniques to children and adults, including traditional ways to paint landscapes, flowers, and birds. Some of his students have gone on to exhibit their brush paintings and win awards in national contests.

“Brush painting is a traditional painting form with a long history. Among the various tools of brush painting, brushes, black ink, calligraphy paper are peculiar to China. The expression form of Chinese brush painting mainly uses brush lines, clusters of dots and changed ink to depict various objects.

For those who have not yet learned Chinese brush painting, you are welcome to learn Chinese brush painting. You can try to depict various objects using brushes and black ink on the calligraphy paper. You will enjoy and be joyful at your first time.“
